The ‘Not So’ Book
For my Competitive Brief I had the choice of either producing a self promotional book based on anything or create a book cover for the book ‘The Outsider’, it was a difficult choice as last year i had two briefs that were the same as these.
I decided to go with producing a self promotional book. It started off with me wanting to produce a ‘not so’ 3D book which would take the piss out of 3D, as i feel everything nowadays is being turned 3D. I would of made images within the book using red, blue and black and have them slightly blurry. When this came about i didn’t have any sort of content to my book (ie: what was going into it) but looking at the phrase ‘not so’ i thought that could be quite an interesting title for the book and got me thinking of things that didn’t quite happen or things that went wrong for some reason or another.
This made me think of events throughout history where things didn’t go to plan. I decided to go with.
- The Gunpowder Plot. 1605.
- The Great Fire of London. 1666.
- Titanic. 1912.
- Houdini. 1926.
- Apollo 11 (first moon landing). 1969.
I started this again with how i approached my GradOne project, and started with a big sheet of paper and started listing things associated with each event and then from there i started coming up with some ideas in my sketchbook, below are scans from that.

So far i’ve produced 3 digitally: The Gunpowder Plot, The Great Fore of London and Titanic. Below are the book layouts for these and also what i’ve done so far regarding layout and type.

Still need to produce images for Houdini and Apollo 11. Starting to screen print these this week/next week and carry on when i get after the new year.
