Gerald and James Exhibition.

I’m really excited and pleased to announce that in May, the Gerald and James Exhibition will be opening as part of the New York Design Week and that my work will be featuring in this exhibition!

Having seen the progress & work that has gone into this exhibition and also how many artists/designers/illustrators are involved, its going to be something special and i’m really happy to be apart of it.

“The Gerald and James exhibition and book launch will take place during New York Design Week 2013 at 60 Reade, off Broadway between Thursday 16 – Sunday 19 May 2013. The exhibition has been designed and made by Liam Hopkins, the hounds are displayed in custom built steel and clear plastic dog kennels, the installation will offer 360 degree views of each Gerald, displaying them in all their glory. Available in kit form, limited edition prints of the artist-designed dogs will also be available to buy for Gerald fans to make their own versions at home.”

Workshop 2 - Drypoint Etching

Here i’ve taken a few pictures of the work the students have produced during todays two workshops and also a picture from last weeks workshop.

The print above was from last weeks Workshop 1 and it shows how the students first print (bottom) turned out and how he took into consideration the tonal elements within the building for his second print (top) and by adding in extra detail to the plate for his second print gave it a more accurate representation of the building he was observing as well as a more interesting outcome.

Below is a print from todays first workshop. Compared to last weeks groups, todays had more of a typographic element to their observational drawings. I picked this out as I felt it looked the most interesting due to how the student chose to frame the image and how it sat on the page/plate. I also felt that the contrast between heavy and light line work and its tonal qualities made it a strong/balanced print.

This print is from todays second workshop. The photograph doesn’t give it justice to how much detail has been put into this drypoint etching. The print to the left was the first outcome from the plate, after this the student decided that she wanted to have a much darker/moodier/erie print, this is then the print to the right. She’d taken into consideration that removing the ink from the sky in a certain way to give it more atmosphere. Adding in highlights to certain parts of the building and also to the pavement which almost seems to have a slight gradient going from right to left. Overall a really great print!

Workshop 1 - Drypoint Etching

Today was my first lesson teaching back at Sheffield Hallam University, this time I’ve been asked to run (alongside print technicians) the Drypoint Etching workshops for the first year Graphic students.

The module ‘Observation & Communication’ is to choose a piece of public architecture, in/near the centre of Sheffield and study it carefully using written notes and observations through drawings. The focus on the module is for primary drawing skills to be the key and how you observe your building and communicate that to the page.

Teaching last year was a completely new experience to me, having being a student from the course and living in the print room I felt comfortable in the environment. Also with it being screen-printing, it was second nature to me what we had to do and it was more the practical/hands on side I was helping with and not the running of the lesson.

This year, the technician delivers the practical induction and my job is to ‘Teach’ … asking students why have they chosen to pick a certain building? Why aren’t they looking at certain details within the building? Have you thought about how you want to re-create this building for a Drypoint Etch and have you taken into consideration certain things … Really pick their brains!

All in all it was a productive first day, everyone was keen to improve on areas they weren’t happy with and listened to what advice I had for them regarding work and being a student on the course.

University Lecture - Lynne Chapman & Myself

I recently did two short presentations to undergraduate students of Visual Communication at Sheffield Hallam University (where I studied). This was a quick presentation to introduce myself to the students and give them an insite to me and how I incorporate different types of analog print within my work.

Alongside this, I’ve been asked for the second year running to teach first year students their introductory lesson in the print room on Etching. Really looking forward to being apart of the Obs & Comms module and this time having more of a teaching role, than a practical/technician role.

After I gave my talk, it was time for the main event … Lynne Chapman. Who has been asked for the seventh year to come and give a talk about ‘Drawing as Reportage’. It was great to see Lynne again, the last time being sat in the audience for this exact lecture.

YCN - Tasting Hastings

Been a long time since i’ve updated this. Kind of forgot I even had it.

But anyway … Awhile back I went to London and interned at YCN for a month. In this time I worked on a short project where I was asked to produce a map for an upcoming event - ‘Tasting Hastings’. Which was held in the YCN shop and featured work from local artists and designers based in Hastings.

It was a bit of a shame I couldn’t make the opening night, as this is what I was working too whilst being there. But it looked like a fun/busy night!

It was a pretty interesting month and a real eye opener to what its like working at design company and also what its like living in a fast paced city like London.

These A2 screenprinted posters are now being mailed out to universities all over the UK. If you’re a student and would like to showcase your work on their site and take part in lots of exciting opportunities then go for it quick as the deadline closes on the 31st October 2011, submit here!

The poster itself is of a street parade involving many students creating, finishing last minute projects, looking through their portfolios and hanging out with a big yeti!

A few weeks back I was very kindly asked by Theta coffee bar at UCS to do a illustration murals on one of their walls, which I managed to start and finish over the weekend. Here are a few photos of the progression, full finished photos to appear tomorrow.

But a big thanks to UCS Union and Theta for letting me do this, hope everyone that sees it enjoys.
